About my latest work - "Aunty Mayor" in Temperature
At the end of April, I had the privilege of joining a group of writers for a workshop hosted by Karavan Press. We gathered to share ideas, stretch our creative muscles through writing exercises, and talk deeply about what makes a short story truly resonate. By the end of the workshop, we’d decided on a theme for the anthology: temperature – a word that felt big enough to hold everything from climate change to emotional intensity.
In the weeks and months that followed, we kept in touch, encouraging each other through countless drafts. My own contribution, Aunty Mayor’, grew from this rich, collaborative process. The story draws on warmth, legacy, and the fierce, steady heat of a woman who knows her place in the world—and defends it with quiet authority.
What I love about this anthology is how differently each writer responded to the theme. Some took it literally, others metaphorically. But every story feels timely, tender, and deeply human. I’m incredibly proud to have Aunty Mayor’ included alongside such beautiful work.
Thank you to Karavan Press for guiding this journey, and to Monique Cleghorn for the stunning design that wraps our stories in something just as special. I hope readers find a sense of connection in these pages—something to cool the heat, or maybe even spark it.
